Cobb County, GA Program
In 2017, Cobb County and Keep Cobb Beautiful applied for a Hefty® EnergyBag® grant and in January 2018, Dow awarded the City a $50,000 grant to establish a local Hefty® EnergyBag® program. Cobb County and Keep Cobb Beautiful have collaborated with key local groups, including materials recovery facility WestRock Recycling, hauler American Disposal, various potential end market users and local sponsors to launch the Hefty® EnergyBag® program. Grant funding was used to provide 20-bag rolls to the first 20,000 American Disposal recycling customers to sign up for the program.
In 2018, Cobb County and Keep Cobb Beautiful applied for another grant and were awarded an additional $40,000 to expand the program in 2019. The grant covers the cost of 4-bag starter kits and postal delivery to another 20,000 households. In July 2019, Custom Disposal and B-Green recycling haulers joined the Cobb County Hefty® EnergyBag® program efforts.
The Hefty® EnergyBag® program is a great opportunity to enhance the community’s existing waste management efforts and keep more plastic waste from ending up in local landfills. Once households receive their Hefty® EnergyBag® orange bags, they can begin collecting suitable hard-to-recycle plastic items. They can then place the full, tightly tied bags in their recycling carts for collection with their recyclable items on their regular recycling days. Materials collected in the Hefty® EnergyBag® orange bags will be delivered to approved end market users, extending their life cycle while reducing materials going to landfills.
