Printing Create-A-Book Books
Create-A-Book, Inc. and the instant book publishing industry, the original "made-while-you-watch" book, was conceived in 1980 to produce books which would encourage children to want to read more by capturing their attention and imagination. How? Just by putting their names throughout the story. The company slogan is, "Reading is Exciting When the Story is About You!," and it really is for kids. The idea was simple. If a child wants to read the story over and over, he is getting practice in reading. Practice does make perfect. Reading as well as baseball, football, typing, piano or even the dull old multiplication tables require repetition for expertise.
Printing
To print Create-A-Books, click on the Create-A-Book title on your main menu. Choose the book you wish to print on the next screen.
Enter the customer's information using the guidelines following this printing section. Remember that if the variable does not have (OPT) for optional besides it on the screen you MUST fill that space in or the story line will be incorrect.
When you are ready to print, put five sheets of laser paper into the printer. After the sheets come out of the printer, pick up the pile and feed the sheets back through the printer just as they came out. If your pages do not come out in the correct order, change your collation to Multi-media. Experiment, but if you have any questions or difficulty with this, email me at Heftypub@aol.com .

Book Exception Guidelines
Sports Book: Coach - use first or last name only, which ever way the coach is known. The word "coach" is automatically part of the text. For example, Coach Spurrier or Coach Bob.
Event - use common names (lowercase) and game, match, competition, etc. For example, basketball game or tennis match. For a list of appropriate event names see the list in the dealer tips section of this manual.
Fishing: Partner - cannot be the same as one of the friends and should be an adult or an older person. Hometown - put in fishing location (instead of hometown), if given. This is true for both versions of the fishing book. If you put in the hometown the story line will not read correctly.
Birthday: Birthdate - (optional) If used, type: July 21st, March 3rd, May 9th, etc. This is the actual Birthday date not the year the child was born. DO NOT include the year with this variable or the story line will not read properly. Age - type only the number.
School: School Name - (optional) type full name of school. For example: Berryhill Elementary School. Age - type only the number.
Camping: Partner - cannot be the same as one of the friends and should be an adult or older person. Two friends only
Baby's Create-A-Book Data Entry Guidelines First Name: Type first name only unless the child will be called by the first and middle names. For example, Mary Beth, Sue Ellen, Mary Margaret, etc. Last Name: Use middle and last names on this line. (or middle initial if given) · If the baby is a Jr., type Stephen Marshall Green Jr. (without the comma after last name.) · If the baby is III or IV, etc., type Stephen Marshall Green III (Without the comma.)
Hometown: Make sure the customer does not confuse where the parents live with where the child was born. Spell out the city and state, no abbreviations.
If the customer wants the place of birth entered in addition to the hometown, you can sometimes insert this information under the hospital parameter. For example, Sacred Heart Hospital, Pensacola. (See also Hospital parameters following this section). Visitors: · Capitalize Aunt, Uncle, Grandmother, Grandfather, Sister, Brother. If grandparents names are together, type the Smith grandparents. Hyphenate Great-Aunt or Great-Grandfather. Leave out pronouns such as (her) grandmother or (his) sister. · If visitors are listed as simply grandparents, aunts, uncles, friends, (plural) do not capitalize. · If titles are in parentheses as in Alice Jones (grandmother), type Grandmother Alice Jones. Exception: When names of brothers and sisters are given as in Lucy (sister), sister can be deleted. However, if sister is listed before the name, type Sister Lucy. · If a family is given for the visitors, type: the Nelson family or the Nelsons. · If visitors are not included with your customers order, us these typical substitutions so the story remains complete, family (visitors line) members (More visitors line) for page 23. On page 24, it would be Family members as it begins a sentence. Visitors have been deleted on page 35. · Omit "Daddy" if listed as a visitor. · The list of names can be shortened to fit into the space by grouping according to title. For example: Grandma and Grandpa Jones, Aunts Melissa, Lisa and Janet, Uncles John and Roy. · Use the ampersand (&) only when space prohibits use of the word "and." For example: Grandma & Grandpa Jones Dedication: Type with love from unless the customer specifies otherwise. Only in the baby book can you overlap this information without it affecting the last page of the book. You do not necessarily have to insert with love from, other options can be:
Dedication: With love on your Christening Day Book from: From Aunt Gail and Uncle Cleve
Dedication: Happy First Birthday from Aunt Janet, Book from: Uncle Mike and Michael
Dedication: With love from Aunt Robbie, Uncle Jim, Book from: Luke, Josh and Shane
If a family, type, The Johnson Family or The Johnsons (no apostrophe)
Date: This is truly an optional entry. You can leave this parameter blank if the customer fails to provide a date, or type in the current year.
Date of Birth: This entry can be either a date or a phrase. If the birth date is not available, use an alternative such as, " one to be remembered." The story will then read: " The date was one to be remembered." Or if given, type out the whole date with no abbreviations.
Time of Birth: (Dashes will indicate spaces) If you do not have the time of birth, substitute a phrase like "just perfect." Note: You must type in the period after "just perfect." to replace the period usually inserted when p.m. is used. Or you may type in nothing and a line will appear in its place (page 7) so that the customer may fill it in.
· Type 2:45__P._M. · If military time, type 2400 (4 digits)__hours. (Do not forget the period.
When all of the variables are provided in the standard version of the baby book, the text reads like the example following:
Melissa Ashley Rabon weighed 6 pounds 14 ounces and was 20 inches long on this special day, her first!
When no information is available, the following phrases in parentheses can be substituted as in the adopted version of the baby book. Melissa Ashley Rabon weighed (exactly the right amount) or (just the right number of pounds) and was (just the right number of inches) or (exactly the right number of inches) when she was born!
** NOTE ** Use only the phrases in parentheses. The word "long" is part of the program. If you type in "long" with the phrase, the text will read: " Melissa Ashley Rabon weighed exactly the right amount and was just the right number of inches long when she was born".
· Type 5_pounds__6 ounces · If no ounces, type 5__pounds · If weight is written 5.6 pounds, type 5.6__pounds · If weight is written 5.6 ounces, type 5_pounds__6_ounces · If weight is written 5.6, type 5_pounds__6 ounces · If weight line is left blank, type just the right number of pounds · If weight line is left blank, then a line will appear in its place (page 12) so that the customer may fill it in. · Type 20_1/2__inches · Also, if the height line is left blank, then a line will appear in its place (page 12) so that the customer may fill it in.
Doctor: There is no doctor information needed for the Adopted Version of Baby's Create-A-Book.
· Type Doctor Gary Johnson (leave M.D. off, Doctor is sufficient.) If more than one doctor, type Doctor Johnson and Doctor Brown. If you don't have room, type Doctors Johnson and Brown. · If the doctor is a Jr., type Doctor Gary Johnson Jr (leave off the period.) The doctor's name is at the end of the sentence, therefore a period is already built into the program. · If a midwife, type Midwife Martha Green. · If the title C.N.M. (Certified Nurse Midwife) follows the name, simply type Martha Green, C.N.M (no period after M) · If doctor line is left blank, type in the doctor, or the doctor in green scrubs. (This is what the picture shows.)
Hospital: · Always capitalize and spell out Hospital, Medical Center, Pavilion, etc. If the customer just writes Saint Mary's or West Side, add Hospital. · Sometimes the customer will write the town the hospital is in. If so, type, Sacred Heart Hospital, Pensacola.
** NOTE ** If the town in which the hospital is located is the same as the hometown, leave it out. The state can be left out if you run out of space. · Spelling of some commonly misspelled hospitals: Sinai, Presbyterian, Kaiser Permanente, Samaritan. · If the Hospital's name is Saint Mary's or Saint Joseph's, type it as the customer writes the name as far as the apostrophes go. · If the hospital line is left blank, type in "the hospital." If the hospital is located in the baby's hometown, you may type in "the hospital in Chicago." It is not recommended that you print out a book with blanks in it, because customers do not like it. · Also, if the hospital information is not given, you may leave it out and the book will automatically print "the hospital" and on page 7, a line will be printed out for the customer to fill it in for themselves.
Mother: · Type only first names. · Exception to this is when the middle name is a part of the name, i.e. Mary Beth. · Also, if the mother's name is different from the father's, you can type in the first and last names of both parents. The story line on page 27 will then read, "Judy Collins delighted in taking care of her little miracle." This may sound more formal than the customer would like, so make sure your customers are aware of this and let them decide how the book should be made. ** NOTE ** It helps a great deal to become familiar with how the variables fit into the story line. Print the book on regular laser paper using different variables. Make sure whichever phrases you substitute fit into the story line correctly.
Sticker Books Presto Print sticker books were conceived as an alternative to the conventional books. By reducing the production time to personalize the books, dealers would be able to set up an infinite number of store accounts. Store employees sell the books for you. You can produce a sticker sheet every minute. Productivity is very high. Remember to place your return address on the postcard in the front of the Presto Print books before leaving or shipping them to a store account. It is a good idea to also place a return address label inside the back cover. This insures that the end customer can locate you to purchase additional books. Printing Printing Presto Print sticker sheets take only about a minute. To print sticker sheets, click on Presto sticker sheets in the main menu. Now choose the sticker sheet you wish to print. Input the data, using the examples in sample data. Now print the sticker sheet. With the sticker sheets, you don't have to worry about collation settings. Make sure you enter the customers mailing address when producing a sticker sheet. Remove the address label and place it on the envelope. This saves you valuable time and alerts the recipient to the arrival of the sticker sheet. Centering During installation, you should have specified what kind of printer that you have. Once that is determined, your sticker sheets should be very close to accurate. However, if one needs to be adjusted, you can choose Edit centering under Edit when you are in a data input screen. Follow the instructions on the screen. If you do need to go through all of the sticker books and fine tune your settings, we recommend that you use a piece of legal size blank paper and run it through the laser printer and then see where the text aligns with the appropriate sticker. Take the paper and place it in front of the sticker sheet and hold them both up to the light. This will give you an excellent idea of how everything is aligned.
Holiday Letters
The Santa and Easter letter listed on the order form, come in packages of 100 and include the envelopes. Many dealers put a Christmas or Easter package together using one of the letters, a book and a call from Santa Claus or the Easter Bunny. To get into the personalized letter software, highlight Personalized Letters (F) on the main menu. A screen will appear which gives you several options:
You will need the following information to complete the holiday letters:
You should print out one of each of these letters on blank paper to get familiar with the wording of each letter. Anything that bolsters your sales is good for business. Experiment with different phrases for some of the variables. Always print a new version on blank laser paper first.
Personalized Clocks
This is a separate DOS software program which allows you to run a full color clock face through the laser printer and add a name. You then have to assemble the clock kit and put the face in place. They are a great crowd gatherer when operating on site. To install this software or to access it, you must get out of Windows completely. For those dealers who have Windows 95, you cannot use the DOS prompt in Windows, you must go to start, shutdown, restart in MS DOS mode, click OK. You will get a C:\WINDOWS prompt. Here you will type: CD\ and press enter. Then you should have a DOS prompt. At the DOS prompt, type A: or B: and press enter. You will get an A or B prompt.
