Create-A-Book Assembly with Safety Bind

Products Needed: Safety Bind Machine, Steel binding strips

After the book is printed, collate the white printed pages with the color pages. Tap the front edges to make them even. The book is held into the cover with a white heavy card stock paper end sheets. These end sheets have glue on one side, and have a peel away liner over the glue. The words Create-A-Book are printed in red on the liner. The end sheets have tabs to help you peel away the liner after the book is crimped. Now place the end sheets (we call "sticky sheets" on the front and back of the book with the red liner to the outside. Put the tabs to the front edge of the book.

Pick up the book, tap the pages to the FRONT one last time, and then place the strip on the back of the book. The book barely extends beyond the strip, make sure the strip doesn’t extend beyond the pages. Place the book in the Safety Binder and pull the handle down three times with firmness.

Placing the book in the hard cover:

Remove the liner from the front of the book by pulling the tab. Make sure that the front of the book matches the front of the cover so you don’t place the book in upside down. Place the book in the cover, staying approximately 1/8 inch from the edge of the cardboard spine. Here are the details how I do it. I put the cover on the table, with the cardboard side up and the back of the cover nearest me. I then hold the bound pages with both hands, the spine facing me and the peeled away side facing down. Then I slowly lower the pages down onto the cover by looking at the three sides of the cover away from the spine. These are the three sides that have the cover picture wrapped around the cardboard. I look for the same amount of space on all three sides, from the book edges to the cover edge (about 1/16 of an inch.) If all three edges are the same, then the book will have been placed in the cover evenly and correctly. We sell a jig for $25.00 that makes this easier, but you can learn it with practice.

Turn the book around and pull the other half of the peel away paper off the book, and then (with the book on the table) pick up the back cover and close it down onto the book. All you have to do here is make sure the book is square, edges to edges. Then press.

For best results, secure the sticky sheet fully by rubbing a soft cloth firmly over the entire sticky sheet and pinch the cover at the bound or center of the book to insure a firm fit. That is all there is to it! Practice binding sample books until you are comfortable with the steps.

(optional) Binding Jig Instructions

For those who have the plexiglass binding jig, lay the binding jig on a table with the open side toward you.  With pages and sticky pages already bound in the metal strip, lay the book in the jig with the front of the book facing up and the metal strip hanging out of the open edge.  Pell the front sticky page liner off.  Take the front of the hard cover and, using the back guide, press the cover down on the sticky/book already in the jig.  Flip the book over end over end, and peel back the second side sticky page liner.  Pull the back of the cover over the pages in the jig, and press it down on the book using the back guide.

Taking a Create-A-Book apart

If you need to take a Create-A-Book apart, you can use a hair dryer to heat up the sticky sheets that hold the book into the cover.  The cover will peel right off when hot enough.  Check with the Create-A-Book office and ask what tool is available to spread the strips apart to take out the pages.  At the time of this notice, a bar was being invented to put into the pages to spread the bar.  If the book was stapled, just remove the staples.

Holiday Letters

Producing the Holiday letters is easy. Simply highlight the correct letter in the CAB software and press [enter]. Input the information the data screen calls for, place the appropriate stationary in the printer, click on file and then print. Place the printed letter in the envelope provided and mail.

You can practice with the variables, using plain paper. The letters are a great way to get your foot in the door with malls and craft shows because malls want "letters from Santa" as a feature of the mall.  You can negotiate a lower rent sometimes if you offer Santa Letters as part of your location package. Many dealers bundle a book with a letter from Santa or the Easter Bunny.

Personalized Clocks and Picture Clocks

The data entry screen for clocks can be found on the main screen of the CAB software. The clock faces go through your laser printer and the name is added to the full color graphics. The actual clocks are purchased separately and come in white only. The clock electric motor and hands come with the clocks.

On the data entry screen, type in name or caption; choose a font; double click on the name of the face to enable the print button. Click on print.

Your Done!

You can now use your color inkjet to make clock faces with any picture.  We offer a generic clock face that only has the hour numbers on it.  Order a pack of these to make your custom clocks.  You will need to get your pictures into the computer, either with a digital camera, a scanner, or from another electronic source like the internet or email or pre-purchased pictures from a disk or program.  Practice on blank paper and hold up your picture over a clock face to a light, and check centering.  You will have to use your own picture program to print color pictures.  When the color picture is centered and sized to your liking, then print it on our clock face.  When your clock is assembled, you will have a one-of-a-kind clock that you and your customer will appreciate and keep for years to come.
